TY Effective Communication

Our Transition Year Effective Communication Course runs for 13 weeks.  I run two 13 week courses each year.  The course will focus on all aspects of Communication, Public Speaking, Presentation skills, vocal work and student well Being.  These skills are learnt through, fun interactive games and activities and group presentation work. All  my  activities are group focused  in a fun safe  environment.  TY Students as they can also  use it as the Personal Skill Component for the Gaisce Award. At the end of the course students will complete an Effective Communication/ Public Speaking Grade 6  exam with the Irish Drama Board of Speech and Drama . This exam covers presenting a talk on a topic of their Choice, a presentation of yourself and achievements to date , and an unprepared talk for one minute of a list of topics given by the examiner.

This course is so  relevant for students  in today's world where surveys show that employers rate communication as the most important trait they want graduates to have. The weekly practice of communicating their ideas to others  and  encouraging students to reflect  on their  own achievements and skills  develops the students communication skills and improves self confidence.  Our next Course starts on Tuesday 7th January  and Wednesday 8th January 2025 . Please enrol now if you wish to reserve a place as it fills up very fast.    Classes   run each Tuesday 6.30pm -7.30pm and on  Wednesday evenings there are three classes  from 4.45- 5.45pm and  6-7pm  The course fee is 230 euros.

I really benefited from the TY Effective Communications course. It is a great mix of fun games and speaking exercises, led by Mary who is so welcoming and helpful. I and a lot of my family members have noticed the improvements in my communication and public speaking skills over the course of the last few months. There is a very small amount of work involved, considering all the benefits I have gained. Overall I really enjoyed my time over the last few months and highly recommend this course.

Mary taught us how to deliver speeches and presentations in front of groups in a fun, interactive way. At the start of the course the final exam seemed like an impossible task, but by the end I was left feeling more than prepared. I loved doing the Effective Communication Course this term. It has been one of my favourite things I have done in TY so far. During the 13 weeks, we learned about the importance of pause, emphasis, tone and eye contact and practised speaking in front of others in various scenarios. After the course, I now feel a lot more confident when called to speak publicly. I really enjoyed the course and would highly recommend it for any student in Transition Year.
